Join us: AI Engineer @ Baobab Tech

The Role

We're looking for a part-time AI Engineer who can ship AI-powered products end to end. The role sits at the intersection of applied AI (LLMs, VLMs, SLMs), infrastructure, and product thinking. You'll translate stakeholder needs into working solutions, prototype fast, throw away what doesn't work, and iterate until it does.

Coding fluency matters, but the shape of this role has changed. We care less about writing every line by hand and more about your ability to design systems, reason about architecture, and deploy reliably. You should be comfortable working directly with non-technical stakeholders to figure out what to build. Then you move from concept to production at speed.

About Baobab Tech

Baobab Tech expands human potential with AI-enhanced digital solutions. We specialize in LLM-enhanced applications, focusing on aiding businesses and non-profits in the social impact space. Our human-centric approach leverages AI and cutting-edge technology to create sustainable digital solutions that enhance human capabilities while driving meaningful impact.

We're built on the principle that diverse teams create better solutions, particularly when developing technology for social impact.

We work with social good organizations, international development agencies, humanitarian organizations, government partners, and non-profits to build technology that amplifies their mission and effectiveness.

Who You Are

You think in systems. You can walk into a conversation with a social impact organization you've never worked with before, absorb how they operate, and start mapping where AI fits within their constraints. You pick up new domains quickly because you're genuinely curious about how organizations work and where their pain points live.

The social impact space sits at the intersection of urgency and limited resources. You understand that tension. You bring ideas from what's happening at the frontier of AI and translate them into solutions that are practical for organizations that can't afford to wait but also can't afford to get it wrong. Your goal is to make sure these organizations benefit from AI advancements rather than being left behind by them.

You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical collaborators. You push back when a request doesn't make sense, and you propose better alternatives when you do.

What We Expect

AI Engineering & Product Development

  • Deep understanding of foundation model capabilities and limitations
  • LLM application development beyond simple API wrappers: building validation flows, observability, monitoring, and evaluation pipelines
  • Fine-tuning small language models and classifiers for domain-specific tasks: sentence transformers, GLiNER2, SetFit, Liquid LFM2, and similar approaches
  • Context engineering as a core discipline: designing retrieval systems, managing context windows, versioning context pipelines, and treating context assembly as infrastructure
  • Designing and orchestrating multi-agent systems where specialized agents collaborate across complex workflows
  • Ability to design and execute evaluations for AI application performance
  • Experience with LLM observability platforms (Langfuse, LangSmith, Braintrust, Weights & Biases, or equivalent)

Pipeline Design & Orchestration

  • Designing RAG pipelines, document processing workflows, and model-serving systems
  • Building and maintaining workflow automation and orchestration for AI applications
  • Thinking across the full lifecycle: from raw input through processing, inference, and output delivery

Infrastructure & Deployment

  • Containerization and container management (Docker, orchestration)
  • Infrastructure-as-code with Terraform or equivalent tools
  • CI/CD pipeline design and maintenance, regardless of the specific platform
  • Cloud platform experience across Vercel, Azure, GCP, or AWS

Core Stack

  • Next.js and the React ecosystem
  • Node or Python for scripting, notebooks, and some backend tooling

AI-Assisted Development as a Baseline

We expect every engineer on this team to use AI-assisted coding tools effectively. If you aren't already achieving 20 to 50x productivity gains compared to a year ago, this role will be a difficult fit.

That said, there's a clear line between productive AI-assisted development and randomly prompting until something works. You should be able to explain every line of code in your codebase, articulate why you'd refactor or re-prompt, and take full accountability for what ships to production. Go beyond the code: understand the business context, the user's problem, and the "why" behind what you're building.

How We Hire

Portfolio Review: Submit direct links to GitHub repositories of applications you've built, particularly those involving LLM integration or AI-enhanced features. We'll schedule live discussions to walk through your codebase together after our coding agent explores your code.

Live Interview Process: No traditional questionnaires. Our interviews are live code and prompting sessions where you'll develop solutions in real-time using AI tools. We want to see your thought process, your problem-solving approach, and how you collaborate with AI.

What We Value Most

  • Problem-solving methodology: How you break down and approach complex technical challenges
  • Business translation: Your ability to move between stakeholder conversations and technical execution
  • Sector curiosity: Willingness to rapidly learn new industries and identify where AI solutions create real value
  • Rapid iteration: Comfort with prototyping fast, shipping MVPs, and reworking based on feedback
  • Professional communication: Clear explanation of technical decisions and trade-offs
  • Quality focus: Attention to detail in code, architecture, and user experience
  • Mission alignment: Genuine interest in building solutions for social impact

Your Impact

Your work will directly shape how social impact organizations adopt and benefit from AI. You'll build tools and systems that help these organizations operate more effectively, reach more people, and make better decisions with limited resources.

Position Details

  • Employment Type: Part-time, flexible hours
  • Compensation: Hourly or daily rates, benchmarked against $70K–$200K full-time equivalent depending on experience and skills
  • Remote-first: Global candidates welcome
