We're looking for a part-time AI Engineer who can ship AI-powered products end to end. The role sits at the intersection of applied AI (LLMs, VLMs, SLMs), infrastructure, and product thinking. You'll translate stakeholder needs into working solutions, prototype fast, throw away what doesn't work, and iterate until it does.
Coding fluency matters, but the shape of this role has changed. We care less about writing every line by hand and more about your ability to design systems, reason about architecture, and deploy reliably. You should be comfortable working directly with non-technical stakeholders to figure out what to build. Then you move from concept to production at speed.
Baobab Tech expands human potential with AI-enhanced digital solutions. We specialize in LLM-enhanced applications, focusing on aiding businesses and non-profits in the social impact space. Our human-centric approach leverages AI and cutting-edge technology to create sustainable digital solutions that enhance human capabilities while driving meaningful impact.
We're built on the principle that diverse teams create better solutions, particularly when developing technology for social impact.
We work with social good organizations, international development agencies, humanitarian organizations, government partners, and non-profits to build technology that amplifies their mission and effectiveness.
You think in systems. You can walk into a conversation with a social impact organization you've never worked with before, absorb how they operate, and start mapping where AI fits within their constraints. You pick up new domains quickly because you're genuinely curious about how organizations work and where their pain points live.
The social impact space sits at the intersection of urgency and limited resources. You understand that tension. You bring ideas from what's happening at the frontier of AI and translate them into solutions that are practical for organizations that can't afford to wait but also can't afford to get it wrong. Your goal is to make sure these organizations benefit from AI advancements rather than being left behind by them.
You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical collaborators. You push back when a request doesn't make sense, and you propose better alternatives when you do.
We expect every engineer on this team to use AI-assisted coding tools effectively. If you aren't already achieving 20 to 50x productivity gains compared to a year ago, this role will be a difficult fit.
That said, there's a clear line between productive AI-assisted development and randomly prompting until something works. You should be able to explain every line of code in your codebase, articulate why you'd refactor or re-prompt, and take full accountability for what ships to production. Go beyond the code: understand the business context, the user's problem, and the "why" behind what you're building.
Portfolio Review: Submit direct links to GitHub repositories of applications you've built, particularly those involving LLM integration or AI-enhanced features. We'll schedule live discussions to walk through your codebase together after our coding agent explores your code.
Live Interview Process: No traditional questionnaires. Our interviews are live code and prompting sessions where you'll develop solutions in real-time using AI tools. We want to see your thought process, your problem-solving approach, and how you collaborate with AI.
Your work will directly shape how social impact organizations adopt and benefit from AI. You'll build tools and systems that help these organizations operate more effectively, reach more people, and make better decisions with limited resources.
